Fraunhofer unveils laser coating and fluorescence scanning innovations
Fraunhofer ILT in Aachen presented a combined extreme high‑speed laser deposition (EHLA) and roller burnishing process (SCaRB) that simultaneously coats and smooths metal parts, eliminating extra machining and improving wear, corrosion and fatigue resistance. The method also enables PFAS‑free multi‑material layers by adding a PEEK polymer coating using residual heat from the laser process.
Fraunhofer IPM demonstrated a fluorescence‑laser scanning system for pressure die‑casting tools that maps the distribution of release agent (Trennmittel) in real time. The scanner creates detailed quantitative images, allowing operators to adjust the amount of release agent precisely, improving part quality and reducing waste, while also detecting residual contaminants that could affect downstream coating or bonding processes.
