Frecciarossa 1000 high-speed rail service to connect Munich and Rome

High-speed rail travel between Germany and Italy is set to expand with the introduction of the Frecciarossa 1000, also known as the ‘Red Arrow’. Following technical upgrades to meet German and Austrian rail standards, the trains are currently undergoing approximately 300 days of testing, including high-speed trials of up to 300 km/h.

Technical challenges, such as differing national requirements for magnetic track brakes and varying electricity and signaling systems, led to delays in the original December 2026 launch schedule. Regular passenger service for the direct connection between Munich, Milan, and Rome is now expected to begin in summer 2027, with one daily trip in each direction.

Plans for further expansion include increasing the service to five daily connections by December 2028 and extending the route to include Berlin and Naples. The journey from Munich to Rome is projected to take approximately 8.5 hours.
