Fred Claire, former Los Angeles Dodgers GM, dies at 91

Fred Claire, the former general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has died at the age of 91. He passed away on Monday in Pasadena, which coincided with his 91st birthday.

Claire’s career with the Dodgers spanned three decades, beginning in 1969 when he worked as a sports writer covering spring training before joining the team’s public relations department. He rose to become vice president of public relations in 1975, where he helped develop the ‘Dodger Blue’ branding and the ‘Think Blue’ campaign.

He served as the team’s general manager from 1987 to 1998. During his tenure, he was credited with building the roster that won the 1988 World Series against the Oakland Athletics. Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten praised Claire’s leadership and his role in bringing many victories and legends to the franchise.

Claire had been battling squamous cell carcinoma since his diagnosis in 2015.
