Fred Ehrsam’s Primavera signs oil production contracts in Venezuela
Fred Ehrsam, co-founder of the cryptocurrency platform Coinbase, is attempting to enter the oil and gas sector through his investment vehicle, Primavera. Ehrsam has spent months in Caracas building connections to facilitate his entry into the Venezuelan energy market.
Primavera recently signed production-sharing contracts with the state-owned oil company PDVSA. This move is considered high-risk, as Ehrsam lacks a traditional background in the oil industry. While major companies like ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips have remained on the sidelines despite calls for investment in the region, Primavera has emerged as one of the few U.S. entities to secure such agreements.
Ehrsam, who serves on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, is reportedly targeting fields in the Orinoco Belt, which contains some of the world’s largest concentrations of extra-heavy crude. Analysts note that significant increases in Venezuelan oil production could influence global crude prices and macroeconomic factors that impact cryptocurrency liquidity.
