Fred explains decision to reject Flamengo transfer

Former striker Fred has revealed why he declined a move to Flamengo in 2016 after leaving Fluminense. In an interview with ESPN, the current Fluminense U-20 coach explained that while Flamengo presented a significant sporting project, he felt joining their rival would have been an “irreparable error” regarding his personal history and relationship with Fluminense.

Following a period of internal friction at Fluminense where his wages were deemed too high, Fred moved to Atlético-MG. During his departure from Atlético-MG, a deal with Flamengo was reportedly nearly finalized, potentially involving player exchanges to offset costs. Despite the attractive proposal, Fred chose to honor his connection to Fluminense.

Fred, who returned to Fluminense to end his playing career, is currently coaching the club's Under-20 team, where he has led the side to seven wins in eight matches.
