Fred Zweep named Hockey Canada’s 2026 Volunteer of the Year

On August 7, 2026 Hockey Canada announced that Fred Zweep of Abbotsford, British Columbia, has been selected as the organization’s Volunteer of the Year for 2026 – the first time a resident of the province has received the honour since 1995. Zweep, who has been involved in hockey for nearly 25 years, serves as commissioner of the British Columbia Elite Hockey League and has overseen BC Hockey’s Program of Excellence since 2021. Hockey Canada highlighted his “integrity, leadership, community and passion for the game,” noting his role in strengthening relationships among leagues, supporting volunteers and mentoring coaches and parents. The award follows his 2025 recognition as BC Hockey’s chair of the board, underscoring his long‑term contribution to the sport’s development in the province.
