Freddy Reyes Pérez, founder of Asociación La Nacional, dies at 90

Freddy A. Reyes Pérez, the founder of Asociación La Nacional de Ahorros y Préstamos (Alnap), has passed away at the age of 90. He died on Sunday, August 30, surrounded by his family.

As a prominent figure in the Dominican Republic's financial system, Reyes Pérez was instrumental in the establishment of La Nacional in 1972, an institution focused on promoting savings, financing, and housing access. He served as President of the Board of Directors until 2021, after which he led the entity's Council of Consultants and Advisors.

Beyond finance, Reyes Pérez had a diverse professional career. He was a lawyer, diplomat, journalist, writer, and educator. He played a key role in the founding of the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), where he served as a professor and dean. His diplomatic service included postings in South America and Japan, where he was decorated by the Emperor of Japan.

In the media, he was known for his work on the television program ‘Encuentro’ during the 1960s. His multifaceted contributions to the economic, educational, and diplomatic sectors of the Dominican Republic have left a significant legacy.
