Ghanaian influencer Abu Trica extradited to US over $8 million romance fraud

Frederick Kumi, known as Abu Trica, was transferred from Ghana to the United States on 9 July 2026 aboard Delta Air Lines flight DL‑157 after the Accra High Court approved his surrender. The extradition ended a series of legal attempts by his lawyer, Oliver Barker‑Vormawor, who said the defense was denied access to Kumi and that the transfer proceeded before a court‑ordered stay could be heard.

U.S. prosecutors allege Kumi coordinated an online romance‑scam operation that used artificial‑intelligence‑generated identities to deceive elderly Americans and extract more than $8 million. He faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money‑laundering conspiracy and related forfeiture counts, each carrying a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The case is being pursued in the Northern District of Ohio, where a jury trial has been set for 8 September 2026.

The extradition resulted from joint action by Ghanaian security agencies and U.S. law‑enforcement officials, sparking debate in Ghana about the propriety of the transfer and the rights of the accused.
