Frederikshavn Municipality to replace nursing home meals with industrial catering
Frederikshavn Municipality in Denmark plans to transition from home-cooked meals to food delivered from large-scale industrial kitchens at nine nursing homes. The municipality estimates this move will save approximately 2.2 million DKK annually.
The decision has drawn criticism from the Food and Nutrition Association (Kost- og Ernæringsforbundet). Marian Aagaard, the regional chair for the association, expressed concern that the projected savings are based on estimates and may not materialize, potentially sacrificing the quality of life for elderly residents without achieving the intended financial benefits.
Family members of residents have also voiced worries, noting that the kitchen environment currently serves as a social hub where residents can smell and interact with the food preparation process, an experience they fear will be lost.
