Fredy Guarín discusses addiction and mental health struggles

Former Colombian footballer Fredy Guarín has shared a personal account of his struggles with addiction and mental health following his professional retirement. Speaking on the Doers podcast, Guarín detailed a period of crisis involving alcohol and drug use that led to a severe incident where he accidentally shot and seriously injured a friend.

Guarín revealed that the emotional fallout from this event resulted in three suicide attempts at his home. He explained that his addiction was a manifestation of unresolved childhood traumas, specifically abandonment and abuse. After seeking help and entering a rehabilitation program supported by a school foundation, he has since focused on mental health advocacy. He currently leads conferences for athletes and young people through his project, ‘El silencio del estadio hizo eco en mi mente’.
