Free Community Cinema Programs Launch in Brazil and Portugal

The Rota Cine MS project, run by the Mato Grosso do Sul State Secretariat of Citizenship with the State Culture Foundation, is bringing free cinema to traditional communities. After a debut in the Tia Eva community of Campo Grande, the program will screen the short film “As Marias” on May 21 in the São João Batista quilombola community and on May 22 in the Chácara Buriti quilombola community. The events include a discussion on ancestry, memory and ageing, and aim to bring cultural policy directly to remote residents.

In Portugal, the 31st edition of the International Environmental Film Festival (CineEco) is returning to Seia for a series of free public screenings at the municipal cultural house’s Cineteatro. From May through July, fifteen award‑winning films will be shown, covering themes such as environmental anthropology, metamorphoses, territory and spirituality, and water cycles. Highlights include the documentary “The Town That Drove Away” (Poland) and the Brazilian short “Enquanto o Céu Não Me Espera”. The program seeks to promote ecological awareness and cultural inclusion across Seia and neighboring municipalities.
