Free vision screenings for children offered in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

On Brazil's Ocular Health Day, eye specialists highlighted the importance of early vision testing, such as the red‑reflex "Teste do Olhinho," which can detect cataract, congenital glaucoma, or retinoblastoma in infants. They advise routine ophthalmologic examinations from six months of age and note warning signs like squinting, frequent falls, or difficulty reading.

The Chamber of Shopkeepers and Merchants of Belo Horizonte (CDL/BH) organized free eye examinations for vulnerable children and adolescents on July 8‑9 at its headquarters. The two‑day event aimed to serve about 300 youths, offering exams, referrals and free glasses when needed. Earlier rounds of the "Ver é Bom Demais" program delivered 5,972 visual tests, 2,854 specialist consultations and 1,860 glasses, with 57.3% of participants showing reduced visual acuity and 78.7% requiring corrective lenses.
