FreeCORE launches as FreeBSD-based fork of TrueNAS CORE

The open-source community has launched FreeCORE, a fork of TrueNAS CORE designed to maintain the legacy of the FreeBSD-based storage platform. This project emerged after iXsystems announced that TrueNAS CORE would enter a maintenance phase, shifting primary development toward the Linux-based TrueNAS SCALE. FreeCORE aims to provide a modern, actively maintained path for administrators who rely on FreeBSD-native technologies like Jails and the bhyve hypervisor.

While the official TrueNAS CORE line was stalled at FreeBSD 13.3, the FreeCORE project has released version 15.0, which updates the environment to FreeBSD 15.0 while maintaining OpenZFS support.

In a separate development for storage integration, a new TrueNAS Proxmox Plugin has been introduced. This plugin serves as a native storage backend for Proxmox VE, allowing users to provision, snapshot, resize, migrate, and delete TrueNAS-backed virtual machine disks directly via iSCSI or NVMe/TCP. The tool aims to automate LUN management and improve snapshot efficiency for teams using Proxmox for compute and TrueNAS for data storage.
