Freedom Beach in Phuket closed following death of German tourist

Authorities have temporarily closed Freedom Beach in Phuket following the death of a 30-year-old German tourist, Jannik Juergen Knobel. Mr. Knobel went missing while swimming on August 10, and his body was recovered off the coast the following day.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has ordered the Royal Forest Department to close the recreational forest area surrounding the beach to mitigate risks during the monsoon season. Minister Suchart Chomklin stated that the closure is a precautionary measure due to dangerous sea conditions, noting that waves along the Andaman coast can reach heights of 2–3 meters or more during thunderstorms.

Local officials are tasked with enforcing the closure of both sightseeing and water activities. While investigators have not yet confirmed if rip currents caused the drowning, officials have noted that the area has experienced previous fatalities during periods of strong winds and waves. The closure is intended to remain in effect until weather and sea conditions are deemed safe for tourism.
