Freedom of expression and political accountability debated in Mexico and Colombia

Discussions regarding freedom of expression and the limits of government power are emerging in Mexico and Colombia.

In Mexico, controversy has arisen following the government's use of the official 'Derecho de Réplica' (Right of Reply) space to list names of journalists, media outlets, and political actors critical of the 'Cuarta Transformación' movement. While the government maintains these are not blacklists but examples used to identify false or manipulated information, critics argue that the state using its institutional power to individualize critics may constitute a form of intimidation.

In Colombia, political scrutiny is being directed at President Abelardo de la Espriella. Critics have noted challenges in his early administration, including legislative friction regarding the appointment of the Senate president and the Comptroller General, as well as his management of recent natural disasters, such as a significant earthquake.
