Freelander 8 SUV Enters Mass Production at Chery‑JLR Plant in Changshu, China

On July 30, 2026 the first Freelander 8 SUVs rolled off the assembly line at the Chery Jaguar Land Rover plant in Changshu, Jiangsu, marking the start of mass production for the revived Freelander brand. The joint venture between China’s Chery Group and Britain’s Jaguar Land Rover invested over $3 billion in upgrades, installing more than 1,100 robots and precision tooling.

The vehicle features advanced technology, including Huawei’s quad‑LiDAR system, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8397 automotive chip, an 800‑volt platform, a 46.3‑inch 8K display and an 1.5‑tonne range‑extender paired with a 60.3‑kWh battery from CATL. Pre‑sales are scheduled to begin on August 10, with test units sent to the Middle East and a market debut planned for Abu Dhabi in September. Production for international markets is already under way.
