Freeport football defeats reigning Class D champion Winthrop

The Freeport Falcons defeated the reigning Class D champion Winthrop/Monmouth/Hall-Dale Ramblers with a score of 29-28 in an early-season Class D South football matchup.

With 2:27 remaining in the fourth quarter and trailing by one point, Freeport coach Paul St. Pierre opted for a two-point conversion attempt rather than risking overtime. Following a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Andrew Thomas, running back Keigan Haveran successfully completed the two-point conversion to take the lead. The victory was secured after a final defensive stop.

Winthrop previously held a 14-7 halftime lead following a 92-yard rushing touchdown by Carter Rand and an 80-yard pass from Porter Lavigne to Lucas Rice. The teams remained tied through the end of the third quarter before Freeport's late-game surge.
