Frei Betto receives Master of Youth Award in Havana

Brazilian theologian and writer Frei Betto has been honored with the Master of Youth Award by the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS) in Havana. Betto was the sole foreign recipient among 17 honorees recognized during the organization's 40th anniversary celebrations.

During his appearance at the AHS headquarters, Betto expressed optimism regarding a future progressive wave in Latin America, suggesting that current global right-wing trends may eventually give way to progressive movements. He specifically noted that the outcome of the upcoming U.S. elections could influence global progressive forces.

Betto also addressed the situation in Cuba, calling on youth to maintain critical consciousness and innovation in the face of economic challenges and the U.S. blockade. He praised the Cuban people's ability to maintain fundamental rights such as health and education.

While the AHS president described Betto as a “dear friend of Cuba” and a reference for his humanism and defense of just causes, his recognition has drawn attention to past controversial remarks he made regarding food consumption and resourcefulness in response to Cuba's economic difficulties.
