Freiburg experiences widespread power outages due to storm damage

Severe autumn storms caused significant disruption across Germany, most notably in Freiburg and the surrounding Dreisamtal region. A powerful gust of wind blew a metal roof into a transformer station in the Littenweiler district, causing a short circuit that left thousands of households without electricity.

Estimates of the impact varied, with reports indicating between 10,000 and 25,000 people were affected by the outage. The University Medical Center Freiburg was forced to limit its emergency services to life-threatening cases only during the disruption. Most power was restored by midday, though some smaller communities like Oberried experienced delays.

Beyond Freiburg, the storms caused widespread damage across Baden-Württemberg, including uprooted trees in the Black Forest and injuries in the Karlsruhe region. Other parts of Germany also reported issues, including fallen trees in North Rhine-Westphalia and the Harz mountains, as well as storm surge warnings for the North Sea coast.
