Freight train derails on southern Moldova railway

Five freight cars carrying crushed stone derailed on the Cahul–Prut 2 railway section in southern Moldova on Sunday. The incident occurred at approximately 12:20 PM near kilometer 25, close to the southwestern border with Romania.

State-owned operator Calea Ferată din Moldova (CFM) reported that no injuries occurred during the derailment. Specialized technical teams were deployed to the site to lift the wagons and repair damage to the railway bed.

Officials noted that the affected corridor is part of a Soviet-era infrastructure that has not undergone major capital rehabilitation since 1956. While the segment has suffered from decades of neglect, CFM stated that government-funded modernization and repair works have recently commenced on the corridor. Technical experts are conducting an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident.
