Castro and Punta Arenas strengthen historical ties for Chiloé Bicentennial

In the context of the Chiloé Bicentennial, the municipalities of Castro and Punta Arenas are strengthening historical ties to honor the legacy of the Goleta Ancud and its role in the 1843 takeover of the Strait of Magellan. Mayor Baltazar Elgueta and Mayor Claudio Radonich have signed a commitment to promote the recognition of September 21 as a significant historical date, with efforts underway to request that September 21, 2027, be declared a holiday in the Chiloé Province.

During commemorative activities, historian Winston Alarcón Cárdenas was recognized by the Chiloé Cultural Development and Innovation Corporation and the Hijos de Chiloé Center of Punta Arenas for his work in preserving the heritage of San Gregorio. The celebrations highlight the cultural and historical links between Chiloé and the Magallanes Region.

Separately, a new coastal heritage circuit has been launched in the Atacama and Coquimbo regions. Spanning 410 kilometers between Freirina and La Higuera, the project aims to boost sustainable tourism and environmental education by connecting 11 key sites and ecosystems along the marine-coastal corridor.
