Freising City Council Rejects Johannispark Park Project

The Freising city council voted 22 to 15 on 28 July 2026 to reject the proposed Johannispark development. The plan envisioned a small park with new trees, a bus stop to ease traffic on Obere Hauptstraße, and a bike lock for student safety, at an estimated cost of €1.2 million, with 60 % of the funding expected from state subsidies.

Mayor Monika Schwind called the vote a missed opportunity for completing the inner‑city renewal, noting that the site will now be cleared, the access road rebuilt, and the existing public toilet facility relocated. Green faction leader Sebastian Habermeyer said the city will await alternative proposals from council members before deciding any further use of the area.

The council’s decision means no immediate investment will be made on the site, and the previously planned infrastructure—such as the toilet pavilion and landscaping—will be dismantled or repurposed pending future proposals.
