Freistadt hosts ‘Der neue Heimatfilm’ festival

The film festival ‘Der neue Heimatfilm’ has opened in Freistadt, running until August 30. The event features 56 films from 36 countries, exploring the evolving concept of home, identity, and belonging through various social and personal perspectives.

During the opening, Austrian documentary filmmaker Ruth Beckermann was honored with the Freistadt City Appreciation Award. The festival, founded by Wolfgang Steininger, typically attracts approximately 4,000 visitors annually.

In related cinematic discussions, the film ‘Der Heimatlose’ (The Homeless) explores themes of identity and belonging. The story follows Hein, a man who returns to his North Sea island fishing village after 14 years, only to find himself unrecognized by his family and community, leading to a legal process to prove his identity.
