Mozambique and Botswana sign eight agreements to boost bilateral cooperation

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo is conducting a three-day state visit to Botswana to strengthen bilateral ties and regional cooperation. During the visit, Chapo and Botswana President Duma Boko signed eight agreements covering sectors such as health, tourism, science and technology, justice, and defense. A key outcome is the establishment of a Binational Commission to elevate the existing cooperation mechanism to a higher level of strategic engagement.

Infrastructure and logistics are central to the partnership. Discussions highlighted the Techobanine deep-water port project, a US$6.5 billion joint venture involving Mozambique, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, which includes a 1,700-kilometer railway line. The leaders also emphasized cooperation in energy, agriculture, and the development of multi-destination tourism experiences between the two nations.

Domestically, Chapo also addressed the IX National Religious Conference in Matola, advocating for the involvement of religious groups in promoting ethical values and social cohesion. He noted that ongoing discussions regarding the revision of the Religious Freedom and Worship Law will continue to seek consensus among civil society and religious leaders.
