Frelimo to hold 13th Congress in Nampula

The Frelimo party has scheduled its 13th Congress to take place in Nampula between July 20 and 25, 2024. This marks the fourth time the party's congress has been held outside of Maputo and the first time it will be hosted in Mozambique's most populous province.

The event is a critical milestone for the new leadership of Daniel Chapo. Delegates will be responsible for electing a new Central Committee, which will subsequently select the Political Commission, the party's most powerful executive body. Chapo faces the challenge of consolidating his leadership and building a robust political machine, as he inherits structures established by his predecessors, Armando Guebuza and Filipe Nyusi.

Historically, most Frelimo congresses have been held in Maputo. Previous sessions held outside the capital include the first congress in Dar-es-Salaam in 1962, the second in Matchedje in 1968, and the tenth in Pemba in 2012.
