Fremantle Early Learning Centre closes due to asbestos concerns
The Fremantle Early Learning Centre in Perth’s southern suburbs has been forced to close following concerns regarding asbestos contamination. The closure comes after a lump of asbestos was discovered in the centre’s garden on Monday and an initial air quality test returned positive for asbestos air fibres.
An air quality assessment conducted by SW19 on behalf of the Department of Communities found that initial results were inconclusive because testing occurred while routine cleaning was underway. Consequently, the centre will remain closed to allow for further testing while the building is unoccupied.
The daycare is situated adjacent to a former community housing site currently being transformed into a residential precinct featuring 700 new homes. Development WA stated that it had previously conducted hazardous materials surveys, engaged licensed removal contractors, and installed an air monitoring system on the boundary with the daycare centre.
