Fremont City Council reverses policy on homeschool diplomas

The Fremont City Council in Nebraska voted unanimously on September 29 to amend hiring regulations regarding educational credentials. The decision allows the city to accept diplomas from non-accredited institutions, including homeschools, for municipal positions.

The policy change follows the rejection of Andrew Coates, a 22-year-old volunteer firefighter and licensed EMT, from a full-time position with the Fremont Fire Department. Officials had previously disqualified Coates because his homeschool diploma did not meet the city’s requirement for an accredited school.

The reversal comes after significant public pressure and a grassroots campaign. The council's decision directly reopens the application process for Coates, who had already completed 78 college credits and served as a volunteer for the Cedar Bluffs Fire Department.
