Fremont, Nebraska, denies firefighter job to homeschooled applicant
The city of Fremont, Nebraska, is facing scrutiny after denying a full-time firefighter position to Andrew Coates, a 22-year-old volunteer and state-licensed EMT, due to his homeschooling background. Although Coates has served as a volunteer firefighter for two years, the city rejected his application on the grounds that his high school diploma was not from an accredited institution.
Reports indicate that the original job posting required applicants to have graduated from high school or obtained a GED, without specifying accreditation. Following Coates' disqualification, the city amended the job description to explicitly require graduation from an accredited high school. While the Fremont Civil Service Commission acknowledged an irregularity in the hiring process, it determined it lacked the authority to overturn the city's employment policy.
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen expressed strong disagreement with the decision, stating that qualified citizens should not be turned away based on their educational background. The governor’s administration has announced it will investigate ways to remedy the situation.
