Agricultural sector faces crisis amid severe drought and heatwaves

Severe heatwaves and persistent droughts are causing a major crisis in the agricultural sector, particularly in France and Martinique. In France, the ecological and economic impact is significant; Minister of Ecological Transition Monique Barbut estimated the cost of these weather events could reach between 10 and 15 billion euros.

Farmers are facing extreme challenges, including scorched pastures and critical fodder shortages. In regions like Finistère, Seine-et-Marne, and Jura, livestock producers are being forced to use winter hay stocks prematurely to feed cattle. In Martinique, the drought has led to the death of approximately 250 cattle out of a herd of 8,000, prompting emergency food aid such as the distribution of bananas to exhausted animals.

The environmental crisis is exacerbating ideological divides among agricultural unions regarding the transition to new farming models. The FNSEA emphasizes that while adaptation is underway, survival is the immediate priority. Conversely, the Coordination rurale is calling for more irrigation and the reintroduction of certain pesticides, while the Confédération paysanne advocates for an essential agroecological shift and protests against pesticide use.
