French agriculture faces crisis from drought and economic pressure

Agricultural sectors in different French regions are facing significant challenges due to drought, heatwaves, and falling commodity prices.

In the Poitou region, the MSA (Mutuelle sociale agricole) has launched an emergency plan to support farmers in Vienne and Deux-Sèvres. The initiative includes operational assistance such as free farm replacements to allow for rest, administrative support, and payment facilities like the suspension or postponement of social contributions. Additionally, a network of 50 psychologists is available to address the mental health risks associated with economic hardship and physical fatigue.

In Martinique, a severe and early drought is threatening local food production. The livestock sector has already seen the death of nearly 250 cattle due to exhausted pastures. While emergency measures, such as the delivery of 15 tons of bananas to livestock via a partnership between Banamart and Codem, have been implemented with state financial support, local officials are calling for more specific and sustainable state aid to prevent the collapse of the island's agricultural industry.
