French Air Force faces fleet pressure amid jet crash and delivery delays

The French Air and Space Force is facing significant operational pressure due to a combination of increased mission demands and supply delays. General Jerome Bellanger, Chief of Staff of the Air and Space Force, reported that manufacturer Dassault is scheduled to deliver only two new Rafale aircraft in 2027. This slowdown comes as the current fleet is being utilized at a rate 15% higher than forecasted due to regional conflicts, NATO deployments on the eastern flank, and defense missions in the United Arab Emirates.

Operational strain is further exacerbated by the phased retirement of Mirage 2000-5 aircraft, which increases the mission load on the existing Dassault Rafale fleet. Additionally, delays in the development of the Rafale F5 version have created budgetary and strategic uncertainty regarding the acquisition of F4 version aircraft.

Separately, a Mirage 2000D combat aircraft crashed in eastern France on a Tuesday evening while returning from a mission. The French armed forces confirmed that one crew member has been found dead, while search operations continue to locate a second crew member, a weapons systems officer. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
