France announces cultural budget cuts for 2027

France is facing significant budget reductions in its cultural sector for 2027 as part of broader government efforts to stabilize public finances. Culture Minister Catherine Pégard has announced that funding for performing arts institutions, including theaters, dance, and music ensembles, will be reduced on a “case-by-case” basis to avoid making institutions too vulnerable.

The audiovisual sector is facing a particularly severe crisis. France Télévisions reported it must achieve savings of approximately 90 million euros by 2027 due to declining state subsidies and falling advertising revenue. Industry professionals have warned that this could lead to a 20% drop in film production funding in a single year, potentially threatening French cultural sovereignty and allowing foreign streaming platforms to dominate the market.

Industry leaders at the La Rochelle fiction festival expressed concern over the “incomprehensible apathy” of public authorities. They noted that reduced investments could lead to fewer productions and a visible impact on television programming by 2028.
