French authorities issue football supporter travel bans
French authorities have issued travel restrictions for football supporters ahead of upcoming matches to prevent violence.
In Marseille, the prefecture has banned Paris Saint-Germain supporters from traveling to the Stade Vélodrome for the upcoming match against Olympique de Marseille due to long-standing rivalry. However, supporters of Paris FC have been granted permission to travel to Marseille, as authorities noted a lack of rivalry between the two clubs and positive behavior from Paris FC fans during previous encounters.
Separately, the prefecture of the Loire has banned Montpellier HSC supporters from traveling to Saint-Étienne for their match against AS Saint-Étienne. This decision follows a history of violent clashes between the two fan groups, including significant riots in November 2024 and February 2026 that required police intervention with tear gas and water cannons.
