French authorities launch safety operations for summer travel

The French police and gendarmerie have opened the free Opération Tranquillité Vacances, allowing residents to register periods of absence so patrols can monitor unoccupied homes. Registration is online and can be made up to 45 days before departure, with the service available year‑round across all departments.

In parallel, the prefect of Gers announced Operation Carton Jaune, a road‑safety campaign that offers drivers an alternative to fines by attending on‑site awareness workshops. The campaign urges compliance with seat‑belt use, speed limits, safe distances, and vehicle loading rules. A recent accident on the RD 939 near Rozès, which killed a 70‑year‑old woman, underscores the heightened risk during the holiday travel period.

Both initiatives aim to increase vigilance and reduce burglaries and traffic accidents as many French citizens travel for summer holidays.
