French authorities restrict gatherings near high schools in Bas-Rhin and Rhône
French authorities are implementing varying restrictions on public gatherings near high schools in response to ongoing student movements. In the Bas-Rhin region, the administrative court of Strasbourg suspended a prefecture decree that had prohibited assemblies near several high schools. The suspension followed legal challenges from groups including the Ligue des droits de l’Homme and various student and legal unions, who argued the bans posed risks to students and lacked precision.
In the Rhône department, authorities have tightened security measures. As of Wednesday, October 7, 2026, gatherings and demonstrations are prohibited around eight specific high schools in Lyon and surrounding areas, including Bron, Vénissieux, and Décines-Charpieu. The new restrictions expand the prohibited zones, measuring 100 meters from the site boundaries rather than from the center of the establishments. Violations, such as wearing protective gear like gas masks or shields in these zones, can result in fines, while participating in unauthorized gatherings carries a 750-euro penalty.
