Revolut and Visa complete first AI-initiated payment in France
Revolut and Visa have successfully conducted the first secure payment initiated by an artificial intelligence agent in France. This test, performed in collaboration with the merchant Cleverbridge, represents a significant milestone in the development of agentic commerce.
During the trial, a Visa test agent initiated a real-world transaction using the Visa Payment Passkey (VPP) system to ensure authentication and client consent. This technology allows an AI agent to navigate the various stages of a purchase—from product selection to final payment—under a predefined mandate from the user.
The goal of this experimentation is to create more intuitive and rapid financial experiences while maintaining existing security infrastructures, including real-time fraud monitoring and identity controls. This development comes amid increasing competition in the sector from players like Mastercard and OpenAI, as companies seek to capitalize on the growing use of generative AI in consumer decision-making.
