French banks transition to mutualized cash services and local retail relays

The French banking sector is undergoing a significant transformation in how it provides cash services, driven by a decline in cash transactions and the high cost of maintaining traditional ATMs. Cash transactions in France have dropped from 68% in 2017 to 51% of individual transactions today.

Major banks, including BNP Paribas, Société Générale, Crédit Mutuel, and CIC, are collaborating to deploy a new mutualized network called ‘Cash Services’. This initiative aims to deploy approximately 7,000 new versatile machines by 2026 that allow customers to withdraw cash, deposit checks, and deposit cash without additional fees, even when using a non-partner bank's interface. This rollout coincides with the removal of roughly 3,000 older ATMs, primarily in urban and peri-urban areas.

To address the lack of physical bank branches in smaller, rural communes, several institutions like Crédit Agricole and Nickel are forming partnerships with local businesses. These local shops, such as grocery stores and bars, act as banking relays, allowing customers to withdraw cash or deposit checks. This system provides essential financial access to residents in remote areas while offering small business owners commissions for the service.
