French camping industry expands with diverse sites and €3 billion turnover

Camping in France has evolved from the simple, inexpensive tent holidays of the 1970s to a multi‑segment market that blends nature with hotel‑level comfort. The sector now includes over 10,000 establishments, generates more than €3 billion in revenue, and offers a range of options from traditional sites to luxury "glamping" accommodations.

Large resorts such as the 40‑hectare, five‑star complex at Marseillan Plage host up to 88 000 guests each summer and employ around 300 staff, while smaller family‑run camps continue to thrive by catering to budget‑conscious vacationers seeking tents and caravans. This dual growth reflects both rising demand for upscale outdoor experiences and the enduring appeal of modest, community‑focused campsites.
