French Catholic Church launches new victim support institution

The French Catholic Episcopate has launched the National Independent Instance for Accompanying Victims in the Church (Iniave), a new institution dedicated to supporting individuals who have experienced sexual violence by diocesan clergy or laypeople acting on behalf of a bishop.

Iniave began operations on September 1, replacing the previous body, Inirr, which operated since 2021. Inirr received nearly 1,800 reports and provided assistance to over 1,200 victims. The new structure will utilize restorative justice practices and focus on creating a coordinated network of support persons.

Key responsibilities include developing an ethical code, training programs for caregivers, and establishing standards for financial compensation. The institution is funded through a special fund composed of mandatory contributions from French dioceses, with the Episcopate promising regular financial audits. Retired judge Sophie Darbois leads Iniave, with lawyer Stéphane Jacquot serving as Secretary General and spokesperson.
