French cities launch anti‑litter campaigns to curb cigarette butt waste

The Bordeaux metropolitan authority has rolled out a city‑wide initiative called "Mon mégot se jette ici" to reduce the dumping of cigarette butts. The programme includes installing 590 street ashtrays and 9,340 waste containers, supporting France's upcoming 2025 law on public waste sorting and producer‑responsibility schemes. Bordeaux aims to channel litter away from its 4,200 km of sewer network and the Garonne River.

Separately, the town of Périgueux has begun a preventive communication campaign targeting a range of public incivilities such as dog waste, noise, illegal parking, speeding, urination and litter, including cigarette butts. The campaign stresses collective responsibility and announces that, after a warning period, fines of €135 for most offences will be enforced to improve urban livability.
