French cities promote urban greening to cool hot streets

Lille is expanding its "permit to vegetate" programme, allowing residents to turn façade footings, public spaces and shared gardens into green islands. The initiative aims to lower urban heat, improve air quality, increase rain‑water infiltration and provide habitats for biodiversity, while also strengthening neighbourhood ties. Applications are reviewed by the city’s Direction Nature en Ville and, if approved, the municipality may fund the planting work.

In a separate example of personal greening, a French homeowner transformed a 10 m² grey courtyard into a cool patio inspired by Moroccan designs. Using traditional zellige tiles, solar‑powered lanterns, a small recirculating fountain and eco‑friendly adhesives, the space was turned into a vibrant, low‑maintenance oasis that demonstrates how small urban areas can be refreshed without extensive resources.
