French Civil Code imposes height limits on boundary hedges

Under French Civil Code Article 671, property owners must adhere to specific height restrictions for hedges, even if the initial planting distance from the property line is correct. Specifically, any hedge located less than two meters from a boundary line must not exceed a height of two meters.

Municipalities may issue formal notices or sanctions if a hedge grows beyond these legal limits. Compliance can often be achieved through regular pruning, ideally performed in the autumn, rather than removing the hedge entirely.
