French clothing market turnover falls 17.6% in September
The French clothing market experienced a sharp decline in September 2026, with in-store turnover falling by 17.6% compared to September 2025. According to data from the Alliance du Commerce, this represents the sector's worst performance in five years.
Two primary factors contributed to this downturn. First, exceptional heatwaves—marking one of the warmest Septembers since 1900—disrupted seasonal purchasing. For example, sales of heavy clothing for women dropped by 45%, while shorts saw a 24% increase. Second, rising inflation, particularly a 21.2% annual increase in energy prices, has constrained consumer purchasing power and reduced travel to peripheral commercial zones.
The decline affects all market segments, with the mass-market segment seeing a 20.2% drop. The downturn is particularly impactful for children's clothing, which saw a 27.4% decrease during a month that typically accounts for 14% of annual sales for that category. Industry leaders warn that the final three months of the year will be decisive for the sector's stability.
