France climate protests demand emergency action after extreme summer

On September 26, 2026, more than 250 climate-related demonstrations and gatherings took place across France. Organized by a broad coalition of environmental groups, unions, and political parties, the mobilizations aimed to demand urgent government action following a summer of extreme weather.

Protesters issued an open letter to President Emmanuel Macron, signed by over 50,000 people, calling for emergency adaptation and mitigation plans. Key demands include taxing the superprofits of the fossil fuel and arms industries to fund climate initiatives, as well as implementing wealth taxes. The movement seeks to address the intersection of climate change with social justice, housing, and public health.

The demonstrations follow a devastating summer in France and the wider European Union. Public health data from Santé publique France indicates that nearly 8,000 excess deaths were recorded in France due to heatwaves between June and September 2026. Additionally, activists highlighted the impact of widespread forest fires, noting that at least 500,000 hectares of forest burned in the EU during the season.

While most gatherings were peaceful, an incident in Clermont-Ferrand saw a driver strike several participants, resulting in at least four minor injuries. In Paris, the planned march was replaced by a static gathering at Place de la République due to the presence of the Pope.
