French court denies release of Albanian businessman Ermal Beqiri
The Court of Appeal in Amiens has rejected a request for the release of Albanian businessman Ermal Beqiri, who remains in pre-trial detention in France. Beqiri is currently facing an extradition request from Albanian authorities.
Albanian prosecutors suspect Beqiri of organizing a network that manipulated public procurement processes to secure information technology tenders. The investigation involves 19 public procurement procedures with an estimated total value of 59 million euros. Beqiri has characterized the legal proceedings against him as political, claiming that while he alleges corruption within the state, no officials have been imprisoned.
Beqiri was originally arrested in late July near Méaulte after flying his private aircraft over the Penly nuclear power plant in the Seine-Maritime region. The French investigative chamber is currently reviewing the extradition request, which includes legal guarantees provided by the Albanian Ministry of Justice, the anti-corruption prosecutor, and the General Directorate of Prisons.
