Basque language recognition suspended in France as Treviño seeks integration
In France, the administrative court of Pau has suspended a municipal decision by Arbérats-Sillègue to officially recognize the Basque language within its territory. The court ruled that under Article 2 of the French Constitution, the use of French is mandatory for public services and legal entities, and that regional languages, while part of France's heritage, cannot be officially recognized as territorial languages alongside French. This decision follows similar legal challenges in other communes.
In Spain, the municipalities of Treviño and Argantzu are seeking authorization from the Spanish Government to hold a referendum regarding the integration of the Treviño Enclave into the province of Álava. Local officials, including EH Bildu councilor Pablo Ortiz de Latierro, expressed hope that the current progressive government will facilitate the process, though they noted potential political shifts following upcoming elections. The initiative faces opposition from authorities in Castile and León, who have indicated a readiness to take legal action to prevent the integration.
