French courts sentence individuals involved in prison escape and police evasion

Two separate legal cases involving escaped or fleeing inmates have concluded in French courts.

In the first case, a man who escaped from Chambéry prison was apprehended in Angoulême. The defendant claimed he believed he was not required to return to semi-liberty due to a procedural error communicated by his lawyer, a claim his legal counsel denied. Despite having ten prior criminal mentions, primarily for theft, the court sentenced him to four months of firm imprisonment with a warrant for immediate detention.

In a second incident in Marseille, a 31-year-old inmate from Les Baumettes prison attempted to evade a police check during an exceptional leave of absence. After visiting his family, the individual drove a high-capacity vehicle at high speeds near a police station, refused to stop, and eventually abandoned the vehicle to flee on foot. Police apprehended him shortly after. The defendant, who was found to be under the influence of narcotics and driving without a valid license, was sentenced following a hearing where the prosecution noted a lack of awareness regarding the gravity of his actions.
