French Cruise Market Expands as World Voyages Gain Traction
In 2025 the global cruise sector carried a record 37 million passengers, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). France reclaimed a spot among the world’s top‑10 cruise markets with 583 600 passengers, a rise of roughly 2 % from the previous year.
MSC Croisières dominated the French market in 2025, capturing 45.7 % of all cruise bookings. The Swiss‑based operator attributes its success to a modern fleet—23 vessels across six classes, including LNG‑powered ships such as MSC World Europa (launched 2022) and its newer sisters MSC World America (2025) and MSC World Asia (2026). Prices start at about €645 for a week in the Mediterranean, while the average French traveller spends €980 per cruise.
The niche segment of world‑wide round‑the‑world cruises, lasting 100‑180 days, is also attracting French interest despite high costs ranging from €12 000 to over €100 000. Demand often outstrips supply, with coveted cabins booked two to three years in advance. Popular departure ports include Marseille and Rome, with itineraries featuring Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and New York, among others.
