French deputies reject tax increases on life insurance savings
French deputies have voted against proposed increases in taxes on life insurance savings. The life insurance sector in France represents a total of 1,900 billion euros in accumulated savings, serving as a primary long-term savings vehicle for households, including retirees, professionals, and small businesses.
Despite the legislative rejection, concerns remain that the government may attempt to reintroduce these tax hikes in the 2027 budget to address public deficits. Critics argue that the focus on taxing private savings reflects a structural inability to reform public spending, noting that France's public expenditure stands at 58.2% of its GDP.
