French digital media shows podcast decline and advertising growth

The French digital landscape is experiencing divergent trends across media sectors. In the podcasting market, new creations have reached an eight-year low. According to a Podchaser study, 153,767 new podcasts were launched in the first half of 2026, representing a 14% decrease from the previous year and an 80% drop from the pandemic peak. While listening numbers remain stable, the market faces intense competition from AI-generated content, and less than 1% of new programs manage to achieve significant emergence.

Conversely, the digital advertising market in France is showing robust growth. Revenue reached 6.689 billion euros in the first half of the year, a 12% increase year-over-year. Search remains the leading segment with 41% of revenue, but social media has surpassed the 2 billion euro threshold for the first time, accounting for 33% of the market. This growth is driven by short-form video demand on platforms like Meta and TikTok. Additionally, retail media is expanding rapidly, generating 775 million euros in revenue, up 18%, fueled largely by retail search.
